Requirements for your Learner Permit

Decisive Driver

NEW REQUIREMENT FOR ALL NOVICE DRIVERS!

All novice drivers in Oklahoma must now complete the free, online Work Zone Safe course prior to getting a permit or license!  Complete at your own pace, but you must have your proof of completion before you can be issued a permit or license.

Must be 15 years of age or older unless seeking a farm permit. Once you have your learner permit, you must hold it for six months and be 16 years of age before you test for your license (or you must hold your permit for 30 days if you are 18 years old or older, if you are 18 years or older you are not required to have a learner’s permit).

Must show the following when you get your permit from Service Oklahoma or Tag Agent:

  Your CONTRACT from our driving school;

  One primary ID. See §1-1 of Oklahoma Driver Manual. The most common choices are an original Birth Certificate or a valid Passport;
  One secondary ID (see §1-2 of Oklahoma Driver Manual. The most common choice is a Social Security Card;
  Even if you don’t use your Social Security Card as a secondary ID, you must know your Social Security Number when at Service Oklahoma;

Parent or legal guardian must accompany the applicant to Service Oklahoma or Tag Agent to sign authorization forms. This is you giving your student permission to pursue his or her license and you giving the state permission to take your child’s finger prints. Note: A Parent or Legal Guardian may complete this PARENT AUTHORIZATION TO OBTAIN DRIVER LICENSE and complete it in front of a Notary. This allows someone else to take your student to Service Oklahoma or a Tag Agent on your behalf to process the Permit application.

Service Oklahoma or Tag Agent will collect a $42.50 license fee to print the learner’s permit.

Restrictions on OK Learner Permit

Permit holders must have a licensed driver age 21 or over (with at least 2 years driving experience) in the front seat for a minimum of 50 hours of behind the wheel driving (10 of those hours at night and 10 of those on the highway) before they are eligible to take the State Road Test. Note: If a permit holder is at fault in an accident or receives a moving violation, the six month probation period starts over from the date of the violation. Additionally, permit holders are only allowed to drive between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
